The Deep South is a belt stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to west of the Mississippi River primarily consisting of five states, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The term was first used to describe the states most dependent on plantations and chattel slavery during the early period of United States history. It means the states in the most southern and eastern part of the U.S. and especially Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
